Social Justice Committee

SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE

The mission of the Social Justice Committee is to serve the parish as its primary resource and catalyst for the work of social justice. The Social Justice Committee fosters pastoral concern and action for justice in the world in all areas of parish life. Our activities are based on the biblical and theological foundations of Catholic social teaching. We aim to emphasize the option for the poor by pursuing issues which address the dignity and rights of people who are socially, politically, or economically disadvantaged. We will maximize opportunities to assist and work with organizations, coalitions, and neighborhood groups to promote our common interests. We promote social action that includes both the private, personal commitments to justice and also public, communal, and institutional commitments to social justice.

Some of the activities we participate in at Our Lady of Peace are:

Provide education on forming a Catholic conscience in order to exercise our responsibility to participate in legislative activities
Provide information to the parish regarding social justice issues as they arise.
Promote Faithful Citizenship.
Support to Missions
Prayer shawls to the shut-ins, sick and elderly
Support of St. Vincent’s and Soup or Socks Food Pantries through food drives, the first Sunday of every month
Annual SouperBowl of Caring to benefit local food pantries
Charity Committee – gives monetary support to those who have suffered hardship such as fire, layoff or other special needs
Rose Sale to benefit the Hannah Center held each Mother’s Day
Establishment of a sister-parish program with Corpus Christi parish in War, WV
